What’s new in ULYSSES 2.90?
With the publication of DIN VDE 0833-4:2024-06 for voice alarm systems (VAS), the ULYSSES simulation software has been revised in several areas and updated with the relevant changes and additions.
ULYSSES 2.90 has been successfully adapted to the requirements of DIN VDE 0833-4:2024-06, DIN EN IEC 60268-16:2021-10, and DIN EN 50849 VDE 0828-1:2017-11. The new module PAUL is also included.
The changes include the fundamental calculation of STI based on the complete MTF matrix, consideration of the crest factor, octave-band background noise, speech level and spectrum for male speech, masking (auditory masking), and hearing threshold (absolute speech reception threshold).
PAUL (Post Processing App for ULYSSES) is a software module developed specifically for the standard-compliant consideration of noise, crest factor, masking, hearing threshold, and for statistical evaluation of ULYSSES simulation results.
STI/MTI calculations and levels from ULYSSES can be evaluated with PAUL 1.07 according to the prediction method of the current standard DIN 60268-16:2020 and DIN VDE 0833-4 VDE 0833-4:2024-06.
In addition, PAUL generates statistical reports and histograms for simple, time-saving documentation of simulation calculations, also for the best 90% of the values.
ULYSSES and PAUL get you to your goal quickly and safely:
With the post-processing app “PAUL,” specially developed for ULYSSES 2.90, you can create the required statistical evaluations of STI and signal levels for easy presentation and documentation of final results.
And thanks to the clear, logical, and very structured workflow, you keep full control of your sound reinforcement concept and the simulation results ... while still being able to optimally use all required calculation options.

And of course, there is also a free demo with all functions (except saving your own project files) for testing...
Here are some quotes from our beta testers, of which we are very proud:
- ... I’m really excited about the new ULYSSES together with PAUL!
- Really very useful!!!! Especially for Voice Alarm...
- What’s really smart is that with PAUL I can quickly and specifically test different noise scenarios, without having to redo all calculations from scratch and without losing track. That simply saves time and nerves.
Important note on compliance of our simulation software!
As part of our comprehensive software upgrade, we have further developed our ULYSSES simulation software and tried to align it as closely as possible with the relevant standards.
The calculations in ULYSSES 2.90 and PAUL 1.07 are now as close as possible to the procedures described in DIN EN IEC 60268-16:2021-10 and DIN VDE 0833-4 VDE 0833-4:2024-06.
During the implementation of new algorithms, our development team unfortunately discovered inconsistencies (non-conformities) in one of these standards, which according to our technical analysis point to factual errors in the described calculation methods of the STI and do not provide plausible results.
We reported this finding informally to the responsible bodies at the beginning of 2025 for review
and received informal feedback that our assessment was likely correct, something seemed wrong, and they would look into it further.
Since the responsible standards committees requested a confidential exchange of information, we cannot publish further details on this and ask for your understanding.
Since we have not received an official clarification or formal correction so far – despite inquiries – and our software upgrade should not be further delayed, we have decided, based on our own examination, to deviate from the calculation methods described in the standard, which we consider factually incorrect.
The algorithms implemented by IFBsoft in these areas are technically and substantively sound, carefully documented, provide plausible results, and also correspond well with real measurements.
A formal report of the identified non-conformity has been submitted to the responsible authorities.
If an official correction is issued, we will adapt our implementation accordingly within a reasonable timeframe if necessary.
