What’s new in ULYSSES 2.90?

With the publication of DIN VDE 0833-4:2024-06 for voice alarm systems (VAS), the ULYSSES simulation software has been revised in several areas and updated with the relevant changes and additions.

ULYSSES 2.90 has been successfully adapted to the requirements of DIN VDE 0833-4:2024-06, DIN EN IEC 60268-16:2021-10, and DIN EN 50849 VDE 0828-1:2017-11. The new module PAUL is also included.

The changes include the fundamental calculation of STI based on the complete MTF matrix, consideration of the crest factor, octave-band background noise, speech level and spectrum for male speech, masking (auditory masking), and hearing threshold (absolute speech reception threshold).

What does PAUL do?

Download

PAUL (Post Processing App for ULYSSES) is a software module developed specifically for the standard-compliant consideration of noise, crest factor, masking, hearing threshold, and for statistical evaluation of ULYSSES simulation results. STI/MTI calculations and levels from ULYSSES can be evaluated with PAUL 1.07 according to the prediction method of the current standard DIN 60268-16:2020 and DIN VDE 0833-4 VDE 0833-4:2024-06.
In addition, PAUL generates statistical reports and histograms for simple, time-saving documentation of simulation calculations, also for the best 90% of the values.

ULYSSES and PAUL get you to your goal quickly and safely:

With the post-processing app “PAUL,” specially developed for ULYSSES 2.90, you can create the required statistical evaluations of STI and signal levels for easy presentation and documentation of final results.

And thanks to the clear, logical, and very structured workflow, you keep full control of your sound reinforcement concept and the simulation results ... while still being able to optimally use all required calculation options.

Here are some quotes from our beta testers, of which we are very proud:

  • ... I’m really excited about the new ULYSSES together with PAUL!
  • Really very useful!!!! Especially for Voice Alarm...
  • What’s really smart is that with PAUL I can quickly and specifically test different noise scenarios, without having to redo all calculations from scratch and without losing track. That simply saves time and nerves.

Notice on Standards Compliance of Our Simulation Software (DIN EN IEC 60268-16:2021-10, Corrigendum 1)

As part of the revision of DIN VDE 0833-4:2024-06, the ULYSSES simulation software was further developed by IFBsoft and aligned with the applicable technical standards.

During the implementation of new algorithms, the development team at IFBsoft identified inconsistencies in the standard DIN EN IEC 60268-16:2021-10, particularly in normative Annex L concerning the prediction of the Speech Transmission Index (STI) using statistical methods and taking background noise into account. The calculation method described in the standard led to implausible and invalid STI values.

IFBcon and IFBsoft reported this issue to the relevant standardization bodies in early 2025, initially informally and later through official channels.

The IEC Maintenance Team MT-60268-16 subsequently decided to publish a Corrigendum (COR1) to the standard IEC 60268-16:2021. This corrigendum corrects only the erroneous formula for parameter "C" in Annex L.

According to our information, Corrigendum 1 was published by the IEC on July 1, 2025, and is available free of charge in English and French (a German version is expected to follow) via the following sources:

IEC Webstore – IEC 60268-16:2021 COR1:2025
VDE Verlag – IEC 60268-16:2021 COR1:2025

The corrected calculation method has been fully implemented in the following software versions:

  • ULYSSES from version 2.90
  • PAUL from version 1.07
The current software versions are therefore compliant with the corrected version of the standard.
